Every crew has a story:
The crew in question are two guys: Galen Bernick and James Nelson. Both have rowed since 8th grade and each has pursued the path to becoming an elite athlete with Olympic-size dreams. Both took the time to develop themselves over different avenues in the rowing world, and they were brought together under the ever-watchful eye of Coach Conal Groom at Mission Rowing.
Their journey started before the COVID-19 Pandemic swept the globe and delayed their goals of qualifying the first time – just as they began the discussion about taking US Olympic trials by storm. The combination was split when Galen sustained an injury before a crucial training cycle before 2020 Trials, and James had to row with another at the initial Trials date. As the world spiraled into COVID lockdowns, however, all events were canceled or rescheduled. Ever the optimists, even with horrible news sweeping the globe, both boys saw 2020 as a chance to stay focused and get better together, aiming once more for the rescheduled Trials in 2021.
Their shell, or rather, “The War Machine” (as the crew has named it) brings together the philosophical tendencies of both athletes.
There is a reason for the name – (yes, we know its a HUDSON rental) – it has one because words do things.
Some explanation is likely required, so below, here are some snippets to provide insight into how this crew executes their mission.
Treatise on Nomadology: The War Machine
Axiom 1 – The War Machine is exterior to the State apparatus:
“It is not enough to affirm that the war machine is exterior to the [State] apparatus. It is necessary to reach the point of conceiving the war machine as itself a pure form of exteriority, whereas the State apparatus constitutes the form of inferiority we habitually take as a model, or according to which we are in the habit of thinking. What complicates everything is that this extrinsic power of the war machine tends, under certain circumstances, to become confused with on of the two heads of the State apparatus.”

“True, there’s rules to this shit, fools dare care
Everybody wanna rule the world with tears for fears
Yeah, yeah, tell em’ tell it on the mountain hill
Running up they mouth bill, everybody doubting still”
